Chapter 23
âHow can you go along with this?â Liam asked me as we walked out of Dr. Hanâs office. Any minute now, the chimes would sound, and the halls would become packed with girls hurrying to their next class.
âBecause itâs the only way we can get the ruby. Besides, no oneâs going to get hurt, I promise.â I hoped that included me.
âYou canât know that.â
âYouâll see. Everyone will return.â
He stopped me. âAll at the same time?â
He sensed my deception, a problem of knowing someone too well. I glanced the other way and started walking again. âYou know I canât promise that.â
He hurried after me. âSomething doesnât feel right, Llona. Weâre in this together, remember?â
It was my turn to stop. I had said this, not too long ago even. Did I mean it? The Light inside me said yes, the darkness no. And herein lied the internal battle of two conflicting emotions.
âCome with me.â I pulled him into an empty classroom and closed the door.
âWhat arenât you telling me?â
I threw my arms around him, surprising even myself. Going with Christian, with Vykens, was insane. It was like willingly swimming with sharks, and having two slabs of bloody beef tied to my hips.
His hands slid around my back, and he buried his head into my shoulder. He heaved several great breaths as if something weighed him down.
I hung onto him just as desperately. I didnât want to ever let go, and it killed me that I had to. Tears burned my eyes, and I gripped him harder, the pain in my heart stretching across my chest.
He gently let go and looked down at me. âChristian wants you too, doesnât he?â
I nodded slowly.
He wiped at a tear that had escaped down my cheek. âAnd you agreed.â
âThereâs a chance he will take me to Sophie and the others. I need to see that theyâre okay.â
âAnd then what?â
âAnd then I help them escape.â
His jaw flexed, but he kept his voice even. âThat is a terrible plan. What were you thinking?â
âIâm thinking I can manipulate Christian until an opportunity presents itself.â
Sunlight shone through the classroomâs big windows, illuminating Liamâs serious green eyes. âBy making him think you have feelings for him?â
âWhatever it takes.â
He lowered his forehead to mine. âThereâs nothing left of the old Christian. You get that, right? Nothing you do or say will make him act like how he was before.â
âI know. I plan on making him think that Iâm the one who changed . . . into exactly what he wants.â
Liam sighed and lowered himself onto the top of a nearby desk. I hated the space that grew between us. I subtly moved closer to him.
âThen what?â he asked. âDonât you think Christian and the others are going to be mad when they figure out theyâve been tricked by Rose and that you knew about it all along?â
I hadnât thought this far ahead but didnât tell him that. âIâll handle whatever happens.â
âI wonât,â he breathed, his gaze burning through me.
I reached up and gently palmed his cheek.
